Definition of “Pedophile”
Sorry, we’re going to get just a little political here today. Several times now I’ve heard conservative commentators defend Congressman Foley, saying he is not a pedophile because he never actually had sex with any of the underage male pages to whom he was sending those rather pathetic sexual instant messages and emails.
For example, I was watching CNN today, and they were interviewing Tom Minnery, VP of Public Policy for Focus on the Family, and he said “I don’t know that Mark Foley is a pedophile, as far as I know, he never actually had sex with any of the pages, he just sent lurid emails to them. That’s a long way from being a pedophile.”
Um…well…the definition of pedophile, according to dictionary.com, is “an adult who is sexually attracted to young children.” There is no mention of whether the adult actually has sex with children. So, I’m sorry, but that is not a long way from being a pedophile. That is downtown Pedophile. Stop defending this guy.

if a pedophile is somebody who is attracted to young children, then something who is thinking of stealing is a thief and somebody who wants to kill somebody is a killer?
can somebody be judged as a pedophile for the sole fact of being attracted to young children?
can somebody be judged as a killer for the sole fact of having thought to kill somebody?

As a victim of frequent and actual sexual assualts from the age of 2, I reiderate with ALL MY VOICE THAT FOLEY IS ABSOLUTELY IN DOWNTOWN PEDOPHILIA!
If I was burned by fire, would I really led another to be burned (without consiousness)? Only if full intention existed. Which any pedophilic behavior acted out more than once, orders.
Would you beleive my step-father, Dr. Charles David London and my birth-mother, Registered Nurse Gillian or Kathleen Windmiller or Matthews or London or Felllows or Shanks (that’s all the ID’s she’s used) were my Pedophiles? Well, I’m not going to stop warning until everyone believes what I know to be more true than anything I’ve ever known, in my entire life. Like Foley, they are “fixated” Pedophiles; good enough to gain your trust.

Theft is an act, murder is an act, pedophilia is a preference. A pedophile is still a pedophile even if he (or she) has never acted on that preference.

Wrong- a pedophile ( Greek, two words child love, obviously an disordered ‘love”) is attracted to children; The attractiion to adolescents has a different name which one does not see often and is rarely in a standard dictionary. Mr. Foley was described as being ‘homosexual’ it is not automatic that one who is attracted to children or the same gender is homosexual ( technically same sex, from the Greek, homos, not ‘man’ from the Latin, homo, a common error as in ” homosexals and lesbians” the latter word is tautological. I agree with those who say that writing e-mails and being “friendly” can be part of the disease, which is often seen as “grooming” the victim and at least shows the person is not guarding the attraction which can be illegal if directed toward a minor (under 18 in this culture at the moment) and immoral, regardless by the traditional definition which of course is changing fast in the ‘popular ” culture even if not in fact but manipulated by Special Interests (SI for me) and so-called “Liberals” and WAS for sure by the standards of the Common Law which is reflected in the Bible both Testaments until the SIs hijacked the culture to impose their a-moral or selectively “moral’ agenda.

Well, as a pedophile myself, (I have been since I was 16) I can decidedly say that, while both you and dictionary.com are correct in regards to pedophilia being the physical attraction to children, and not necessarily acting upon that attraction, Mark Foley is guilty of acting upon those urges, despite the fact that he is actually not a pedophile at all, but an ephebophile. I can firmly say that I would never hurt a child (and never have) and I would be deeply offended if anyone assumed that simply because I have a physical attraction to children, that I would do anything sexually to a child, or sexually solicit a child in anyway.
